New Season = New Clothes, Right?

Finally I can see the end of winter and the beginning of spring. We never seem to have a very long spring thanks to our March and April blizzards :( Seriously why do I live in the Midwest? Oh yes, it is because my family and friends are close and we have great summers (usually).

With a new season around the corner and two growing little girls, this momma had a great excuse to shop for some new and fun summer clothing. I of course couldn't resist placing an online order to my favorite kids store, Naartjie. I have mentioned this a few times on my blog and facebook but it is one of the best kids stores I have found. Naartjie is a South African based retailer where all the design work still takes place in South Africa. Also, their clothes have a very cool flare to them which makes them completely unique. The fabric is soft, the clothes wash and wear well, and look adorable on. The price point is good too and many times there are coupons or free shipping. 

I try to buy a few outfits every season for Maya as Makenna gets to wear all the hand me downs thanks to the great quality.  When my order finally arrived, I felt like a little girl on Christmas morning.  The outfits are adorable and Maya seems to really like them.  Of course I had to take a picture to share on my blog.

Short Trip Out of Town - Finally!

This past weekend we finally got out of town for a short but long weekend. We took off on Saturday afternoon and came home later afternoon on Monday. I can not express how much we needed to get out of town and enjoy some family time away from home.

What did we do? Well...lots actually. It wouldn't be a trip for us if our days were jammed packed with stuff.

Highlights of our trip included:

Dinner and visiting with my good childhood friend, Cara, and her loving family.

Ikea and Mall of America with our friends Jenny, Geoff, and adorable daughter Addie whom we have known since 2007 as we traveled to Ethiopia together.

 Swimming and lounging at the hotel (Maya's favorite thing of the whole trip - sorry Addie and Cassidy!)

 Children's Museum - Kids had a blast but Dave and I chuckled as it seemed the entire place was surrounding by kids and mom's who are expecting!

 And lots and lots of yummy food!

Although it is good to be home and to sleep in my own bed, I am ready for our next adventure as we all had a great time!

A Blog Update

I have had a lot of positive and helpful comments regarding my post about my blog and whether to keep it going or not. I can't express how grateful I am to have received such wonderful and encouraging comments from family, friends, and fellow bloggers (who I also consider friends at this point). I really didn't know exactly what I wanted to do but knew that I loved or used to love blogging.


These past few days I have posted a few times. I have to say that I thoroughly have enjoyed it and loved it just like I used to. I have also had some time to read some of my favorites blogs (which I love probably more than posting). So I have decided to continue on with Conspicuous Family!!!

A few comments left encouraged me to think about my audience and decide who I want to blog to or for. I guess the answer is simple. I blog for me. I want this blog to be real, honest, and a reflection of who I am as a person. I am not about to be someone I am not and I am not looking to be a big time blogger. 

I want to blog about parenting, the struggles and highs of it.
I want to blog about my interests such as music, shopping, being with friends, etc.
I want to blog about adoption, Ethiopia, and Kolfe Boys Orphanage.
I also want to blog about my beautiful daughters and showcase their funny moments, happy moments, and milestones.
I want to blog about mommy tips and hot topics related to parents and children.
I want to blog about anything that moves me.

So if you like what you read and enjoy my blog, please continue to follow me. I'd be honor to be a blog people visit.  I also welcome any comments and please leave your blog URL so I can follow you back!

Got a Question for You

I'd like to know how everyone feels about these new carseat guidelines.  Any of you who have children between the age of 1 and 2 changing your kid back to rear facing?  I guess Dave and I haven't talked about it but I highly doubt we will move Makenna back to rear facing.  Not only have we changed out our car seats, but she is used to be front facing and is used to having leg room.  I can't even imagine what would happen if we move her back to rear facing.  Is it really that much safer for the child?  I guess I am perplexed and would love to get some other opinions.

Pressures of Being a Mom to AA Children

On Sunday afternoon we attended an adoption playgroup at a local gymnastics place in town. The girls had a blast. You should have seen Makenna run down the trampoline and crawl into the foam pit. She was smiling from ear to ear! Maya also had fun and really enjoyed the crazy big swing that seated at least 4. I too had fun but was kind of bummed too.

Honestly I felt like maybe an inch high at most. You see, I put a lot of pressure on myself even though I shouldn't. I know I can be way too hard on myself. Sunday I felt horrible about the lack of time and effort that I have been putting forth on Maya's hair. I rarely even "style" it anymore for so many reasons. I know my reasons are all legit but it doesn't make me feel any better. All the other little cutie pies had their hair perfectly done thanks to their mothers. One mom spent 7 hours adding yarn to her daughter's box braids. It was beautiful! I can't even imagine spending that kind of time on my daughter's hair. I failed to mention this same mom has a total of 5 kids and both of her AA girls had beautifully styled hair. I am in awe of her.

Sunday night was bath night at our house. After we gave both girls a bath and washed/conditioned their hair, I decided to style each of the girl's hair. I felt the need to prove to myself that I could still braid and style Maya's hair.  I spent some time looking online for some inspiration and finally decided on doing piggyback braids.  For Makenna, I decided to just do one single cornrow considering she is not a fan and Dave had to help me out and hold her. 

It is hard being a white mother of two Ethiopian daughters.  I want to do the right things when it comes to their hair and skin as it is important to me.  I never want to be that mother who doesn't do anything with their hair and only throws it up into a ponytail because it is convenient and easy.  Like my friend said, it is all priorities.

My Blog

I have been tossing around the idea of writing my last blog post and saying good-bye to Conspicuous Family. When I started my blog back in the fall of 2006, it was to inform friends and family about our adoption process. From there it turned into a place to watch Maya grow and our journey as a family. The blog eventually grew into a place where we could connect with other adoption families, meet other mommy's, and to continue to keep friends and family updated on our lives.

So what changed?

Life really. It seems it is harder and harder to keep the blog current and content worthy to be read. A friend told me just the other day that it is all about priorities and what you choose to fit into your day. She is right.

As I think about my beloved blog, I want nothing more to continue to update it and to continue to connect with other adoption families and mommy's. I know my family enjoys keeping up with the girls and seeing pictures of them. It is a great way to document M&M's lives as well as an outlet to express my feelings that I have as a mother of two Ethiopian girls. The entire point of my redesigned blog is to

Reflection of My Past

Have you seen the TV show Parenthood? It is on Tuesday nights at 9pm on NBC. If you have not watched it, I highly recommend it as it is a show that really captures the realness of families. Yes it is fictional but the family dynamics are very real.

I am actually a few weeks behind so I just watched the show from February 22. In this episode teenagers Amber and Drew's dad who is played by John Corbett comes back into their lives after being absent for many years. Amber is angry. She is angry that her dad feels he can come waltzing into her life and expect them to have a daughter and father relationship. Drew feels his dad has changed and is accepting him back. Drew very much needs a father and is desperately trying to hold on to his dad.

In this episode, the dad brings Drew back to the house and is visiting with Drew's mother played by Lauren Graham and Drew in the kitchen. Amber strolls in and the dad asks if Amber would like to join them on Friday (meaning Drew and him). Amber replies with a fairly harsh no but then the dad continues to ask her. Amber finally blows up at her dad. In her response to him, she tells him that she needed him all her life and that he was never there for her. She cries, she yells, and she is hurt. Amber then turns and walks away. The dad is quiet and says he must leave. After the dad leaves and it is just Drew and his mother in the kitchen, Drew blows up at his mother for allowing Amber to talk to his dad in that matter. Drew is crying, hurt, and sad. 

As I watch this story line unfold, I am overwhelmed with my own emotions and thinking about my own past.  My mother raised myself and my two siblings while my dad moved far away from us and became very distant.  There were many years where I never even spoke to him as he never called, sent a card, or wanted to be apart of my life.  It wasn't until I was a senior in college when he reached out and wanted to form a relationship.  I was maybe 23.  I like Amber was very hurt and didn't see the point of building any kind of relationship.  I needed a father when I was 5 or 7 or 13 but not at 23.  I did happen to form a relationship with him but not the daughter-father kind of one. 

By watching this episode and thinking about my own childhood, it reminds me how important it is to be present in my girls life and to have both parents in their lives.  I will be forever grateful for my mother who worked so hard to raise us and to provide for us on her own.  As I have said before, parenting is hardwork but when your daughter tells you she loves you and gives you a big bear hug, it is all worth it.  I wouldn't trade being a mother for anything in the world.
